How to Prepare for an Ultrasound Scan

Modern ultrasound and other diagnostic imaging tests have become part of diagnostic exams. They provide an efficient and non-invasive way for clinicians to get a better understanding of your physical health. Using the images from the exam, they can make an accurate diagnosis of your condition.

When you book your appointment for your private ultrasound scan, make sure you’re thoroughly prepared. It will prevent any problems that may result in delays or rescheduling.

Preparing for an Abdominal Ultrasound

An abdominal ultrasound is typically used to check your liver, kidneys, spleen, gallbladder, pancreas, biliary tract and abdominal aorta. The results of the exam will be used to identify any growth (e.g. stones or tumours) or disease in these organs.

  • Do not eat or drink anything for six to eight hours before your appointment. If you have to take medication, drink as little water as possible.
  • Avoid eating anything fried, greasy or fatty for your last meal. Additionally, avoid eating or drinking any dairy products before your appointment.
  • Do not chew gum before your appointment. Doing so will cause you to swallow air that may distort the final images.

Preparing for a Pelvic Ultrasound

A pelvic ultrasound checks the urinary bladder. For female patients, this type of ultrasound is done to check the uterus, ovaries and adnexal masses. For male patients, this imaging test checks their prostates’ health. The results of this exam identify blood flow problems and any unusual changes to the organs.

  • Drink 32 ounces of water or juice at least an hour before your appointment. You will need a full bladder for your ultrasound exam.

Prostate-Transrectal Ultrasound

  • Do a cleansing at least two hours before your appointment. Most clinicians prescribe an enema product to help you.

Preparing for a Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is an effective way to diagnose different conditions, from sprain and strains to trapped nerves and arthritis. Unlike the abovementioned imaging tests, this type of ultrasound exam does not require any strict preparations.

  • Most clinicians advise patients to wear loose and comfortable clothing.
  • Avoid wearing jewellery to the appointment. If you do choose to wear jewellery and other accessories, make sure to bring a small pouch to keep them in during the exam.
  • Avoid putting on perfume, cream or lotion on the areas that will be checked. These products may react badly to the ultrasound gel and cause skin irritation.
