At Home Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring

At Home Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring

Vista Health is a leading provider of Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) services across the UK. An ABPM assesses your blood pressure at regular intervals over a period of 24 hours – during both the day and night. The test allows you or your doctor to gather information about your blood pressure whilst going about your daily routine. If your doctor suspects you have high blood pressure this may be the test they recommend. High blood pressure is often without symptoms but can also be associated with dizzy episodes, headache, fatigue, nose bleeds or blackouts.

What is At Home Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM)?

An ambulatory blood pressure monitor (ABPM) is used to assess your blood pressure over time (24 hours). The test allows your doctor to gather information about your blood pressure, whilst you continue with your daily activities.

This test may be recommended if you have common risk factors such as:

  • Being overweight
  • Smoker
  • Drink too much alcohol or caffeine based drinks
  • Poor diet (high salt content)
  • Poor sleep patterns
  • Age >65 years

Complete diagnostic assessment of your blood pressure

ABPM can be used as a general health check and can help your doctor establish if you have normal blood pressure. As the monitor records over 24 hours we are able to capture regular recordings whilst you undertake your normal day-to-day activities such as relaxing, exercising, or sleeping.

It is important to identify the difference between a sustained high blood pressure versus temporary elevations commonly associated with ‘white coat syndrome’. A sustained elevation in blood pressure puts additional strain on your heart, blood vessels and other major organs.

Risks associated with high blood pressure:

  • Heart disease (including heart attacks & heart failure)
  • Vascular disease and aneurysms
  • Stroke
  • Kidney Failure
  • Types of Dementia

ABPM is similar to blood pressure recordings obtained by your Doctor, using a cuff that inflates around your upper arm. A blood pressure monitoring cuff is fitted to your upper arm, underneath your clothing, and connects to a small monitor which stores the information. The cuff will inflate at regular intervals during 24 hours to record your blood pressure – half-hourly during the day and then hourly during the night-time.

Please note: that some people, particularly those with very high blood pressure, may find the recording uncomfortable as the cuff inflates to measure the peak blood pressure. The discomfort should last only a few seconds as the cuff deflates rapidly, this can be minimised by keeping your arm relaxed and still during the brief period of recording.

Whilst ABPM is a safe and usually painless test, we recognise that being told you need to get your heart examined might cause anxiety and concern. Our knowledgeable and passionate medical team will be with you every step of your journey.
