What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is an effective diagnostic procedure that allows your consultant to examine your bowel in detail. Your doctor may recommend a colonoscopy to investigate the following symptoms:

  • Rectal bleeding
  • Unsolved abdominal pain
  • Chronic constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Inability to control bowel movements (bowel incontinence)
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Feeling exhausted for no obvious reason
  • Itchy anus
  • Anal discharge

A flexible telescope is inserted into your back passage and some air is blown into the large bowel. The endoscopist will be able to perform biopsies and take photos to help make an accurate diagnosis.

It can be used to detect bowel cancer and evaluate certain conditions, such as Crohn's disease, colon polyps, tumours, diverticular disease and diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, and inflamed areas of inflammation. If colon polyps are discovered during the procedure, they are removed and sent to a laboratory for analysis.

What happens during a Colonoscopy?

We understand that having a colonoscopy examination may cause worry and anxiety. Our professional and compassionate medical team will be there for you every step of the way, holding your hand.

The colonoscopy can be performed under conscious sedation and usually takes between 30-45 minutes depending on the patient. An endoscope (flexible tube with a camera on one end) will be inserted through your anus to the bowel. They'll look at pictures sent to a video screen that the camera captures as it passes through your body. A small amount of air will be pumped into the tube to your bowel to help the consultant see your bowel more clearly. The endoscopist may offer you gas and air or a sedative to help you relax if required. During the procedure, you may be asked to change positions, for example lying on your back or side.

If necessary, your doctor may take biopsies (samples of the colon lining) during the examination to be analysed in a laboratory. If polyps are detected (small lumps of tissue), these will be removed simultaneously.
