What is an MR Arthrogram scan?
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging which is a way of taking pictures inside the body without using x-rays. An MRI scan is a safe and painless procedure.
An MR Arthrogram (an MRA) is a diagnostic MRI technique used to assess the condition of a joint after it has been injected with a solution containing gadolinium (sometimes referred to as a contrast agent or "dye"). It is most commonly used to look inside the hip, shoulder, knee, wrist, elbow or ankle. A contrast solution is injected into the joint area to highlight several joint structures.
The scan will be carried out under local anaesthetic to prevent pain from the area where the dye is injected into your joint. An X-Ray or Ultrasound scan will be used to ensure the dye is injected in the correct place.

To diagnose joints such as the knee, wrist, elbow, shoulder and hip, imaging equipment will be used to create detailed images detailing the inside section of the joint.
There are two processes involved in an MR Arthrogram appointment:
- The first step of an arthrogram is where the MRI contrast agent will be injected into your joint.
- The second step is an MRI scan of your joint.
Vista Health have experienced radiologists that will perform the procedure ahead of the MRA scan and report on the findings in a clinical report. Your referrer can then plan treatment and recovery based on the scan diagnosis. We aim to deliver all reports to your referrer within 3 working days.
Important: The report will come from a security email software called Mimecast.
*Includes a full written report within 3 working days
