What is an MRI scan?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging which is a way of taking pictures inside the body using strong magnetic fields and radio waves. An MRI scan is a safe, painless and non-invasive procedure which captures high-quality images of inside the body. MRI scans are widely used to view the joints, muscles, nerves, bone marrow, blood vessels and other body structures.

During an MRI scan, the patient lies down on a table that slides through a large tunnel containing powerful magnets. It is this strong magnetic field that allows doctors to see inside your body in a way previously only possible through surgery.

It is suitable for every part of your body, including bones, soft tissues and the brain, and is one of the most advanced imaging techniques used to date.

Head

Do you suffer from headaches, dizziness, strange sensations or paralysis? If you do then please speak to our expert team as an MRI scan may find the cause.

Joints and muscles

An MRI scan can help diagnose pain and symptoms relating to severe joint pain, injury, ligament tears, and bone fractures. Examples of joints include your shoulder, arms, elbows, wrists, hands, fingers, knees, legs, ankles, and feet.

Spine

An MRI scan would help find possible causes of sciatica, back pain, injury, scoliosis, or paralysis. Call or contact us via the form below to get advice.

Face

A face MRI scan is a diagnostic tool used to look into specific areas of your face, such as the bones, joints, and soft tissues. This includes the ears, eyes, sinuses, jaw, and nose.

Pelvis

Issues with your prostate, fibroids, ovarian disease, arthritis, bursitis, groin issues, gynae problems and unidentified hip pain can be diagnosed with MRI.

Heart

MRI scans can provide photographs of the heart, including the valves and blood vessels, which can aid in the diagnosis of heart disease or defects, such as congenital heart disease and heart muscle conditions.

Abdomen

Abdominal pain can involve the liver, kidney and pancreatic pathologies. Our expert team at Vista Health are on hand to help you at every step of the way.

Frequently asked questions

Can I refer myself?

Yes. We accept self-referral for many symptoms and body parts in most cases. However, a referral is required for some specialist scan services.

If you require and do not have a referral we offer a GP consultation service to provide you with one.

How quickly can I have my MRI scan?

We offer immediate access to MRI scans, with many locations even offering same-day access.

We provide specialist MRI services all day, every day inclusive of evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

You can even self-refer and book your own appointment here.

How much is a private MRI scan?

Our MRI scans start from as little as £249. The price varies depending on how soon you would like your scan.

The cost of a standard MRI per body part is:
• Priority MRI scan: £365 (Within 7 days)
• Standard Scan: £345
• Off-peak scan: £249

When booking online you can even spread the cost over 3 months interest free.

The price includes:
• A full written report is sent to you and your referring clinician, or NHS GP if you have self-referred within 3 working days.

How long does a scan take?

An MRI scan usually takes between 20 and 40 minutes, but the actual duration of the scan varies depending on the size of the area being scanned and the number of images that need to be taken.

Can I discuss my results?

We offer a consultation service with GMC registered GPs to discuss your scan results.
*20% consultation discount will be applied when booked together with your scan.

What is the difference between a traditional scanner, Upright MRI and an extremity scanner?

  • Traditional MRI scanners are large tube-shaped machines that produce a stronger magnetic field, giving them the ability to take more detailed, higher-quality images. They have powerful magnets to produce 1.5Tesla and 3Tesla magnetic fields. The length of time needed to complete an MRI scan can take as little as 20 minutes.
  • Upright MRI scanners are an alternative to conventional MRI and are specifically designed for claustrophobic or anxious patients, offering optimal image quality. Upright MRI scanners are open-fronted at both sides which creates greater patient comfort and reduces claustrophobia.
  • Extremity scanners are specifically designed to take images of the upper and lower limbs including the arm, leg, hand or foot. They allow the patient to sit comfortably, while a specific part of their body is placed inside the scanner, which eliminates the potential for claustrophobia. However, due to their low magnetic tesla strength (from 0.2Tesla) the procedure takes longer and produces lower quality images.
  • *Some providers only have extremity scanners but market as traditional or open MRI scans, please ensure you choose the right scan for you.

We understand that you may wish to discuss this with a family member or a friend before booking an appointment, so we have put together a printable MRI summary sheet for your convenience.
