Fast, affordable private prostate MRI scans
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with on average one in eight men diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime. A private prostate MRI scan with Vista Health helps identify abnormalities in the prostate gland, potentially leading to the early diagnosis of conditions including cancer.
We offer access to private prostate MRI scans at locations across the UK, with specialist radiologist reports and images available within three working days of your scan.
What is an MRI prostate scan?
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, a way of taking pictures inside the body using magnetic fields and radio waves. A private MRI prostate scan uses the technique to focus on the prostate gland and the surrounding structures. It’s a safe, painless and non-invasive procedure.
Prostate MRI is used for the detection, evaluation and diagnosis of cancer and other conditions. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, MRI prostate doesn’t expose the patient to radiation.
Why choose to have a private MRI prostate scan?
A prostate MRI is intended for men aged 40 and above who may have specific indications. These could include:
-
Raised PSA levels
If your blood tests show elevated prostate-specific antigen
-
Abnormal rectal exam
If a GP or clinician detects irregularities
-
Family history of prostate cancer
Particularly if a first-degree relative was diagnosed
-
Urinary issues
Such as frequent, unexplained urination or difficulty urinating
- Other prostate concerns
Including unexplained changes to sexual function
What conditions can a prostate MRI scan detect?
- Prostate Cancer
Prostate MRI is highly effective in identifying potential cancerous abnormalities within the prostate gland, enabling the recognition of suspicious regions that may need additional evaluation or biopsy.
- Prostate Size
The scan can detect a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, which could lead to urinary symptoms.
- Lesions or Anomalies
A lesion is an irregular region, mark, or growth that could indicate the presence of infection, inflammation or prostate cancer.
- Pelvic Tissue Health
To a limited extent, a prostate MRI can also assess the bladder, rectum, colon, seminal vesicles, and pelvic bone marrow for any irregularities or abnormalities. However, if these are areas of concern a scan tailored to that area may be required.

Bi-parametric prostate MRI (bpMRI)
A bi-parametric prostate MRI is typically used as an initial assessment. It uses two key MRI sequences to look at the prostate in detail and identify areas that may need closer review. Because it doesn’t use contrast dye, it’s often quicker and may be suitable for people who can’t have contrast.

Multi-parametric prostate MRI - with contrast (mpMRI)
A multi-parametric prostate MRI includes the same sequences as a bpMRI, plus an additional “dynamic” series taken after a contrast dye (gadolinium) is injected. This extra information can help provide a more detailed picture in certain cases, such as if your clinician needs additional reassurance or further clarification from the scan.

How long does a prostate MRI scan take?
A bi-parametric scan usually takes about 20 minutes. A multi-parametric scan with contrast (mpMRI) can take up to 40 minutes.
Is a prostate MRI scan safe?
Yes. It is non-invasive and does not use ionising radiation. Some scans use a contrast dye called ‘gadolinium’ that is safe for most people.
Will I need contrast dye?
Contrast is only used for multi-parametric scans (mpMRI). Bi-parametric scans (bpMRI) do not require contrast.
When will I receive my prostate MRI results?
Reports and images are usually ready within three working days and are sent digitally for easy access.
How should I prepare for my prostate MRI scan?
You can eat, drink, and take medication as normal. Follow any instructions your clinic gives you.
