What does the test measure?

qFIT (Quantitative Faecal Immunochemical Test)

The qFIT test detects very small amounts of blood in your stool (occult blood) - this is the same test used in the NHS bowel cancer screening programme.

Bleeding can be an early sign of a bowel health problem that needs further investigation, such as bowel cancer (also known as colorectal cancer) or inflammatory bowel disease.

Calprotectin

This marker measures inflammation in your intestines, helping identify conditions like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.

H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori)

This detects infection with H. pylori bacteria, which is a common cause of stomach ulcers and gastritis.

What this test checks

qFIT stands for Quantitative Faecal Immunochemical Test. This stool test detects and measures tiny amounts of blood in your stool, which are invisible to the naked eye. It does this by detecting levels of a protein in red blood cells called haemoglobin.

Blood in stool can be a sign of different health conditions, including bowel cancer.

Calprotectin is a protein released by your gut when it is inflamed. It can be tested for in your stools. Raised levels suggest that bowel symptoms are due to an inflammatory bowel condition, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, rather than a non-inflammatory bowel condition, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

H. pylori refers to the bacteria Helicobacter pylori, which can infect the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. A stool test for H. pylori infection can investigate bowel symptoms, such as persistent indigestion, bloating and nausea. Although most cases of H. pylori infection do not cause any symptoms, around one in 10 people will develop peptic ulcers or gastritis.
