Symptoms that May Warrant an Arm MRI
If your symptoms are severe or if their cause is difficult to determine, your physician may have you undergo an MRI of the relevant part of your arm to determine the cause. You may need one if you’re experiencing:

What an Arm MRI Scan Detects
An MRI scanner will take cross-sectional images of your bones, muscles and other soft tissues. This provides your radiologist with detailed information to diagnose you with, allowing your doctor to prescribe an appropriate treatment.
Upper Arm
Of your upper arm and forearm, the former is the less complicated. An MRI scan will show images of your ligaments, tendons, humerus and the four upper arm muscles, the biceps, brachialis, coracobrachialis and triceps.
Forearm
Your forearm is far more complex. It’s made up of two bones and 20 muscles. The MRI images will show the specific locations of any damage or abnormalities.
Possible Diagnoses
Based on the results, your radiologist may diagnose you with a range of conditions, including:
- Bone fractures
- Muscle or tendon tears
- Infections
- Nerve damage
- Tumours
- Osteoarthritis
Your diagnostic report will tell your physician the exact cause of your problem. They can then more effectively treat you.
How To Prepare For Your MRI Scan
It’s unlikely that you’ll have to do anything special to prepare for your MRI scan. You can eat and take medication normally unless told otherwise.
The most important part of your preparation is informing our patient care team of your medical history. Your radiologist may need to make adjustments to the procedure, depending on whether you have any of the following electronic implants or conditions:
- Artificial heart valves
- Artificial joints
- Pacemaker
- Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)
- Cochlear implants
- Pregnancy
- Claustrophobia
- Allergy to MRI contrast material
In most cases, you will be able to undergo an MRI scan even if you have any of these implants and conditions. However, it is best to inform your radiologist anyway to be safe.
