Diagnostic Elbow MRI Scan

Get Back to Your Everyday Life

If you regularly participate in sports and other physical activities, there’s a chance you might suffer from an elbow injury due to overuse. Most of the time, it’s not necessary to get checked by a doctor. But a scan may be required if you’ve been suffering for weeks or months.

Vista Health will help you get back to your everyday life. If your injury keeps you from enjoying your usual activities, an elbow MRI scan will reveal the cause and allow you to get appropriate treatment.

When to Get an Elbow MRI

You should consider booking an elbow MRI if you sustained an injury or are experiencing intense pain, swelling, and bruising around your elbow. It may also help identify the cause of any mobility impairment.

What an Elbow MRI Scan Detects

An MRI scanner uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to capture detailed images of the inside of your elbow. It can show cross-sections of your:

  • Bones
  • Muscles
  • Cartilage
  • Tendons and ligaments
  • Other soft tissues

With images of these body parts, your radiologist will be able to identify damage and abnormalities and accurately diagnose your condition. MRIs can detect:

  • Bone fractures
  • Ligament tears
  • Nerve damage
  • Inflammation
  • Dislocation
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Tumours

The information your radiologist collects from the scan will help your physician better understand your condition. They can then prescribe an appropriate and effective recovery plan.

How To Prepare For Your MRI Scan

Usually, all you’ll have to do to prepare is provide your medical history information. Your radiologist will need to know if you have any electronic implants or conditions that could interfere with the scan or make it unsafe for you. These include:

  • Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)
  • Pacemaker
  • Cochlear implants
  • Artificial heart valves
  • Artificial joints
  • Claustrophobia
  • Pregnancy
  • Allergy to MRI contrast material

In general, implants are safe to use MRIs on. However, they may lower the quality of the images, and it’s better to be safe and tell your radiologist about them.

In some cases, patients are administered an MRI contrast material which improves image quality, but this is rare.

The scan itself is simple. After removing any piercings and jewellery and changing into a gown, you just lie down and stay still. Elbow MRI scans usually take 20 to 25 minutes.
