Symptoms that May Warrant a Head MRI

A head MRI can help you identify the cause of symptoms such as:

  • Persistent headaches
  • Tremors or seizures
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Weakness
  • Extreme physical fatigue
  • Extreme mental fatigue
  • Difficulty processing information

What A Head MRI Scan Reveals

We provide different types of MRI scans focused on the brain, eyes and inner ears. Here’s a closer look at what each type of head MRI scan might reveal:

Brain Scan

A scan of the brain allows your radiologist to see if there are any issues in its structures, including:

  • Cerebral cortex
  • Brain lobes
  • Brainstem
  • Ventricles
  • Cerebellum
  • Thalamus and basal ganglia
  • Meninges
  • Veins and arteries

Based on the results, your radiologist may diagnose you with:

  • Bleeding

  • Inflammation or swelling

  • Fluid build-up

  • Brain development problems

  • Tumours

  • Infections

  • Pituitary disorders

Orbits Scan

Your orbits consist of several complicated structures. A scan will show:

  • Muscles associated with eye movement
  • The globes of each eye
  • Eyes
  • Both optic nerve
  • Blood vessels
  • Fat deposits

With images of these parts, your radiologist can detect the presence of:

  • Haemorrhage
  • Inflammation or swelling
  • Trauma
  • Optic neuropathy

Inner Ears Scan

An inner ear scan helps diagnose problems within the internal auditory meatus (IAM) or inner ear canal. The images will show the bones, nerves, and other tissues in that area to diagnose any of these conditions:

  • Acoustic neuromas
  • Sensorineural hearing loss
  • Meniere’s disease and other conditions that cause balance problems
  • Tinnitus

How To Prepare For Your MRI Scan

As a patient, you likely won’t need to prepare much. You can eat and take medication as you normally would unless told otherwise. When you visit our diagnostic centre, one of our friendly staff will ask you about your medical history.

Our staff needs to know if you have any of the following implants or conditions:

  • Any type of cardiac device such as a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)
  • Cochlear implants
  • Any type of device or implant that has been inserted within your body

  • Artificial joints
  • Allergies to medication or IV contrast material
  • Claustrophobia
  • Pregnancy

These may affect how the MRI procedure can be performed safely. We may need to utilise different techniques or take additional precautions depending on your condition. Also, don’t wear anything with metal parts, as MRIs use a powerful magnet.

Once we have all the necessary information, you just need to follow instructions during the scan. Typically, you just need to remove metal from your person, such as piercings, let yourself be positioned on the MRI table, and stay still.

In some cases, you may be administered a contrast IV. It allows your radiologist to see the structures within your head better. You will feel a warm sensation going through your body, but that’s it.
