When to Get a Hip MRI

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you may want to schedule a hip MRI scan:

  • Hip or groin pain
  • Limping
  • Swelling or tenderness

What a Hip Scan Detects

An MRI scanner uses radio waves to produce detailed images of your hip's inner structures and the surrounding tissues. It can show any damage or abnormalities in your:

  • Muscles
  •  Ligaments
  • Cartilage
  • Additional soft tissues
  • Top of the femur
  • Pelvis socket areas

There are numerous possible causes of your hip pain. These include:

  • Hip Trauma
  • Inflammation
  • Ligament or tendon tears
  • Muscle strain
  • Bone fractures
  • Bone bruises
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Infection or necrosis
  • Dislocation
  • Tumours

Once the radiologist identifies the cause of your hip pain, your physician can recommend an appropriate treatment.

How To Prepare For Your MRI Scan

A hip MRI scan is a non-invasive procedure. You may be asked to fast before the scan, but these cases are rare. Most of the time, you can eat and take medication normally.

The most you’ll have to do in preparation is inform your radiologist of your medical history. They will also need to know if you have any of the following implants or conditions:

  • Claustrophobia
  • Pregnancy
  • Allergies to medication or IV contrast material
  • Pacemaker
  •  Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)
  • Cochlear implants
  • Artificial heart valves
  • Artificial joints

Based on the information you provide, your radiologist may need to work around your condition or implant to ensure your safety and avoid distortions in the images. They may also recommend an alternative diagnostic examination.

During the procedure, you will be asked to remove any metal such as piercings, change into a gown and lie down on the MRI table. Afterwards, you just have to stay still for 15 to 30 minutes.

Don't Delay Your Appointment

You might be tempted to simply ignore any hip pain, hoping it will heal with time. However, if it recurs or worsens, it’s better to get diagnosed as soon as possible. Otherwise, you risk making your condition worse by not getting treatment earlier.

Vista Health will support you on your healthcare journey. You’ll receive expert advice from our friendly staff. They’ll guide you through the whole process, inform you of your treatment options and help you get treatment sooner.
