When to Get a Lower Leg MRI

If you notice any of the following symptoms, you may want to get a lower leg MRI (between your knee to ankle) to identify the cause:

  • Growth or lump on the shin
  • Recurring or worsening bone pain
  • Weakness and loss of mobility

What a Lower Leg MRI Scan Detects

An MRI scan will take detailed, cross-sectional images of your lower leg, allowing your radiologist to see its inner structure. These images will reveal any damage or abnormalities in your:

  • Bones (tibia and fibula)
  • Calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus)
  • Tendons and ligaments
  • Cartilage
  • Nerves

Based on the results of your scan, your radiologist may diagnose you with any of the following conditions:

  • Fractures
  • Soft tissue-related sprains
  • Muscle strains and tears
  • Nerve compression
  • Tendonitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osgood-Schlatter disease
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Shin splints
  • Compartment syndrome

With more detailed knowledge of the cause of your lower leg pain, your physician can recommend an appropriate treatment. The earlier you get an MRI scan, the faster you get treated, and the more likely you are to make a full recovery.

How To Prepare For Your MRI Scan

MRIs are a non-invasive procedure, so you don’t have to prepare much. You may be instructed to fast beforehand, but this is rare with lower leg scans. Usually, you can eat and take medication normally.

The most you have to do to prepare is to provide your radiologist with information about your medical history. They need this in order to ensure your safety during the procedure.

MRI scanners use a powerful magnetic field and radio waves. Suppose you have any conditions or implants that may interfere with the procedure or make it unsafe for you. In that case, your radiologist may take extra precautions or recommend a different diagnostic exam.

Conditions or implants that may be of concern to your radiologist include:

  • Claustrophobia
  • Pregnancy
  • Allergy to MRI contrast material
  • Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)
  • Pacemaker
  • Cochlear implants
  • Artificial joints
  • Artificial heart valves

The MRI scan itself is straightforward. You remove metal objects from your person, change into a gown and lie down. The scan will take 30 to 60 minutes, and you must stay still during this time.

Don’t Delay Your Treatment

You’ve likely considered just ignoring your lower leg pain and hoping it goes away on its own. However, don’t hesitate to schedule an MRI if it recurs or worsens. By getting a diagnosis as early as possible, you’ll maximise your chances of recovery and prevent your condition from getting worse.
