Diagnostic Mouth and Jaw MRI Scan

Maximise Your Chances of a Full Recovery

Your jaw is crucial to your daily life and health. An injury could get in the way of eating and speaking, greatly impairing your ability to socialise and negatively impacting your mood. If you’re experiencing prolonged jaw problems, you need to get it checked as soon as possible.

Quickly get an accurate MRI scan for your jaw and have your symptoms diagnosed through Vista Health. Scheduling an appointment takes just five minutes, and you can set it to be as early as tomorrow.

When Do You Need a Mouth and Jaw (TMJ) MRI?

Consider getting a mouth and jaw MRI if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Pain that travels through your jaw, face and neck
  • Pain in your jaw or near your ear
  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking
  • Stiff jaw muscles
  • Loose teeth
  • Painful clicking or popping in the jaw

Your doctor may also order a mouth and jaw MRI scan if it is difficult to determine the cause of your symptoms or if they need further information to develop a treatment plan.

What a Mouth and Jaw (TMJ) MRI Scan Detects

Your radiologist can take cross-sectional images of the inside of your mouth and jaw using an MRI scanner. Then, they will examine the following for any damage or abnormalities:

  • Jaw muscles (five in total)
  • Mandible and teeth
  • Cartilage disks

Based on the results of the scan, your radiologist may find any of the following issues:

  • Fractures
  • Dislocation
  • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction
  • Osteonecrosis
  • Odontogenic tumours
  • Injuries to bones or tissues

With your diagnostic report, you can then go to an oral pathologist. They will use the information in the report to determine the best treatment for your condition.

How To Prepare For Your MRI Scan

Our patient care team will need to know if you have any of the following conditions or implants:

  • Pregnancy
  • Claustrophobia
  • Allergy to MRI contrast material
  • Pacemaker
  • Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)
  • Artificial joints
  • Artificial heart valves
  • Cochlear implants

Based on this information, your radiologist may need to work around an implant to avoid distorted images or take extra precautions to ensure your safety. For example, they may teach you relaxation techniques or administer a sedative if you’re claustrophobic.
