What is an MRI scan?
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging which is a way of taking pictures inside the body using strong magnetic fields and radio waves. An MRI scan is a safe, painless and non-invasive procedure which captures high-quality images of inside the body. MRI scans are widely used to view the joints, muscles, nerves, bone marrow, blood vessels and other body structures.
During an MRI scan, the patient lies down on a table that slides through a large tunnel containing powerful magnets. It is this strong magnetic field that allows doctors to see inside your body in a way previously only possible through surgery.
It is suitable for every part of your body, including bones, soft tissues and the brain, and is one of the most advanced imaging techniques used to date.

What is the difference between a traditional scanner, Upright MRI and an extremity scanner?
- Traditional MRI scanners are large tube-shaped machines that produce a stronger magnetic field, giving them the ability to take more detailed, higher-quality images. They have powerful magnets to produce 1.5Tesla and 3Tesla magnetic fields. The length of time needed to complete an MRI scan can take as little as 20 minutes.
- Upright MRI scanners are an alternative to conventional MRI and are specifically designed for claustrophobic or anxious patients, offering optimal image quality. Upright MRI scanners are open-fronted at both sides which creates greater patient comfort and reduces claustrophobia.
- Extremity scanners are specifically designed to take images of the upper and lower limbs including the arm, leg, hand or foot. They allow the patient to sit comfortably, while a specific part of their body is placed inside the scanner, which eliminates the potential for claustrophobia. However, due to their low magnetic tesla strength (from 0.2Tesla) the procedure takes longer and produces lower quality images.
- *Some providers only have extremity scanners but market as traditional or open MRI scans, please ensure you choose the right scan for you.
We understand that you may wish to discuss this with a family member or a friend before booking an appointment, so we have put together a printable MRI summary sheet for your convenience.
