Diagnostic Thigh MRI Scan

Identify the Right Treatment

There are several possible causes of thigh pain. It could be anything from a strained muscle to a bone tumour. If your condition isn’t getting better over time, you need an accurate diagnosis to identify the proper treatment and prevent it from worsening.

Use Vista Health’s MRI services to find the cause of your thigh pain quickly. Our expert care patient team will address your concerns, answer any questions and direct you toward additional resources to help you recover.

When to Get a Thigh MRI

Common problems you may experience that could warrant getting a thigh MRI scan include:

  • Persistent pain in your thigh
  • Difficulty walking
  • Numbness
  • Swelling or bruising

What a Thigh MRI Scan Detects

Your radiologist will use an MRI scan to take detailed images of cross-sections of your thigh – the area from your hip to your knee. These will show if there is any damage or abnormalities in your:

  • Muscles
  • Bones
  • Tendons and ligaments
  • Cartilage
  • Other soft tissues

Based on the results of the scan, your radiologist may identify any of the following issues:

  • Fractures
  • Ligament tears
  • Muscle or tendon strain
  • Bone tumours
  • Compartment syndrome
  • Iliotibial band syndrome

The MRI scan images will allow your physician to know exactly where the areas of concern are. They’ll be able to formulate an effective treatment plan according to your needs.

How To Prepare For Your MRI Scan

You can eat normally and take your usual medication. As a patient, most of your preparation will be answering questions regarding your medical history. Your radiologist needs to know of any implants or conditions that may affect the MRI procedure. These include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Claustrophobia
  • Allergy to MRI contrast material
  • Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)
  • Pacemaker
  • Cochlear implants
  • Artificial joints
  • Artificial heart valves

It’s generally safe to undergo an MRI scan if you have implants or are pregnant. However, it is best to inform your radiologist regardless, as there’s a chance they may cause the procedure to be unsafe. They may need to take extra precautions or recommend a different diagnostic examination.

The MRI scan itself is straightforward. You just need to remove any metal objects, change into a gown, lie down on the table and stay still for 30 to 60 minutes.
