Find the Right Treatment
There are several organs in the pelvic cavity, including the urinary bladder, rectum, reproductive organs for females, and the prostate gland for men. It can therefore be challenging to find out the cause of your pelvic pain. You’re also more likely to develop hip joint problems as you age.
To identify the root cause of your symptoms, a thorough clinical history is required from your referring clinician so that the correct scan examination can be performed to best answer the question at hand. You’ll get an accurate diagnostic report so your physician can formulate an effective treatment plan.
Symptoms that May Warrant a Pelvis MRI
A pelvis MRI will help you find the cause of symptoms such as:
- Pelvic pain
- Hip pain
- Stiffness or loss of mobility
- Inflammation
If you experience any of these issues and they don’t disappear within a few weeks, have your pelvis checked.
We offer different types of pelvis scans:
- Pelvis Musculoskeletal
- Pelvis Gynaecological
- Sacroiliac Joints Scan
- Groin scan
- Prostate scan
What a Pelvis MRI Scan Detects
Your radiologist will use an MRI scanner to take images of your bony pelvis and the surrounding soft tissues, such as muscles, ligaments and tendons associated with it and your hip joints.
Pelvis Musculoskeletal
A scan of your pelvis will capture images of your:
- Pelvic girdle
- Muscles and ligaments
- Other soft tissues
Any damage or abnormalities in these parts will show up in the images. You may be diagnosed with any of the following conditions:
- Fractures
- Bone bruises
- Ligament and tendon tears
- Muscle strains
- Osteoarthritis
- Bursitis
- Infections
- Dislocation
- Tumours
Pelvis Gynaecological
- Female - reproductive organs (uterus, ovaries, bladder, rectum)
Prostate
- Male - bladder, rectum, prostate gland
Sacroiliac Joints Scan
A sacroiliac joint scan will show the sacrum, the ilium, where they’re joined to the pelvis and the surrounding tissues at the base of the spine. The images may indicate the presence of sacroiliitis, which is an inflammation of one or both joints, or sacroiliac joint dysfunction.
With an accurate diagnosis of your issue, your physician will be able to determine what treatment will be best for you.
Groin Scan
The groin is the creased area joining the thigh to the torso, on either side of the pubic bone. It is the area of attachment for the adductor muscles of the thigh which help hip movements. The main reasons for assessing the groin are signs of muscle strain or inguinal hernia.
How To Prepare For Your MRI Scan
The most you need to do to prepare for your MRI scan is to provide our patient care team with information about your medical history. Your radiologist will ask you if you have any implants or conditions that may make the procedure unsafe for you. These include:
- Cochlear implants
- Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)
- Pacemaker
- Artificial joints
- Artificial heart valves
- Pregnancy
- Claustrophobia
- Allergy to MRI contrast material
Your radiologist may utilise different techniques to ensure your safety and avoid distortions in the images. If they judge the procedure as unsafe for you, you may need an alternative diagnostic examination.
During the MRI scan, your radiologist will have you remove metal objects such as jewellery and piercings, change into a gown, lie down on the MRI table and stay still. The scan will be done within 30 to 60 minutes.
