What is an Echocardiogram?
An Echocardiogram (ECHO) uses ultrasound waves to produce images of the heart on a screen; the same technology used for performing pregnancy scans. Your Echo Report will be produced by the Cardiac Physiologist and overseen by our Consultant Cardiologist Clinical Lead.
A private Echocardiogram can catch early signs of heart disease, identify heart abnormalities, and guide doctors in treating the condition accordingly.
Symptoms may include:
- Breathlessness and tiredness
- Persistent ankle swelling
- A persistent cough
- Rapid heart rate
- Weight loss
Echocardiogram scans are used to detect:
- Heart failure
- Assess Left & Right ventricular function
- Valvular heart disease
- Cardiomyopathy
- Pericardial Disease
- Aortic dissection

Why would you need an Echocardiogram?
Your GP or doctor may recommend an echocardiogram to check large blood vessels, heart chambers or heart valves.
Heart Disease
The heart fails to pump a sufficient amount of blood around the body at the correct pressure.
Coronary Disease
Whilst we cannot visualise the coronary arteries, an Echo may indicate blockages are present by abnormalities in the heart wall motion and contraction.
Endocarditis
A rare bacterial infection of the inner lining of the heart, often effecting the heart valves.
Cardiomyopathy
Conditions effecting the pumping chambers whereby the heart walls may abnormally thicken, or the chambers increase in size.
