JAG Accredited Private Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
A Flexible Sigmoidoscopy is a procedure used to examine the inside of your back passage and lower part of your bowel. A Sigmoidoscope, a flexible tube with a camera at the end, is used in the test. This is inserted into your back passage to capture pictures of your intestine.
The investigation is used to confirm the presence of any abnormalities and can be used to investigate symptoms such as constipation, changes in bowel behaviour (diarrhea), bleeding from your back passage, anal discharge, and can diagnose conditions such as inflammation, bowel cancer, and polyps.
Quality Assured
Quality is a priority for us. The Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy (JAG) has accredited several sites within the service.

What can a Flexible-Sigmoidoscopy investigate?
A Flexible-Sigmoidoscopy may be recommended by your doctor if you have a problem with the lower part of your large intestine. Symptoms may include:
- Lower bowel symptoms - bleeding from your rectum, diarrhea, or constipation
- Check on existing bowel conditions such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
- Assessing bowel cancers before surgery
- Managing volvulus, a medical condition in which the intestine twists and becomes obstructed
Some of these symptoms may suggest medical conditions such as colon cancer and rectal cancer.
During a Flexible-Sigmoidoscopy, the Consultant Gastroenterologists will insert a flexible telescope (Endoscope) into your back passage and will blow air into your Colon (large bowel) to allow them to see everything. Inflammation, piles (Hemorrhoids), or polyps will all be checked and biopsies (removing small pieces of tissue) may be taken to help make an accurate diagnosis.
The problem may be caused by a polyp (small growth), which the endoscopist may be able to extract during the procedure.

What happens during a Flexible-Sigmoidoscopy?
Our endoscopy team will walk you through the procedure and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you might have. Your consultant will be with you the whole time, and the test will be stopped if you feel any discomfort. For the procedure, you will need to change into a gown. Your legs will be tucked up to your chin while you lie on your left side on a bed.
Photographs of the bowel lining are taken during a sigmoidoscopy. If your consultant identifies any anomalies, tissue samples will be taken (biopsies) and will be sent to a lab to be analysed by a pathologist. If polyps are detected in your bowel lining, they can be removed with a wire loop placed down the colonoscope during the operation.
Polyps, ulcers, inflammatory cells, and bowel cancer can all be detected with a sigmoidoscopy in the lower part of your large intestine.
