A Gastroscopy, also known as a Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, or Upper GI Endoscopy, is a technique used to examine the upper digestive tract using a thin telescope to investigate symptoms such as diseases of the stomach, esophagus (gullet), and duodenum.

The procedure is a reliable check-up for gastrointestinal disorders that is performed in convenient, private facilities by consultant gastroenterologists. A Gastroscopy will help determine whether you have a problem with the upper section of your digestive system.

What can a Gastroscopy investigate?

A Gastroscopy can be used to investigate symptoms you may be experiencing. It can also be used to examine or treat certain medical conditions. Symptoms may include:

  • Indigestion
  • Heartburn
  • Long-term abdominal pain
  • Persistent nausea and vomiting of blood
  • Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia)
  • A decreased amount of red blood cells in the body (anemia)
  • Unexplained blood loss from your bowel

The following are some of the most common causes of the above symptoms:

  • Infection
  • Ulcers
  • Gullet inflammation (esophagus)
  • Acidity

Some of these symptoms may also suggest medical conditions such as peptic ulcers, coeliac disease, hiatus hernia, esophageal cancer, Barrett's esophagus, gastro-oesophageal-reflux-disease (GORD), and cancer of the stomach.

A small, flexible camera called an endoscope is used by your consultant to pass through the nose into your esophagus. From there, the endoscopy passes through to the small intestine (duodenum).

During a gastroscopy, a small sample of your blood tissue called a biopsy may be taken of the esophagus, stomach, or small intestine and sent for analysis under a microscope to help diagnose and determine your condition. Also, the doctor will take photographs which will help provide a diagnosis.

What happens during a Gastroscopy?

Your consultant will insert a flexible telescope (endoscope) into the back of your throat and down into your stomach until you're comfortable. The endoscope then travels down into your small intestine (duodenum). Your doctor will examine the images captured by the endoscope and shown on the screen for signs of inflammation or ulcers. If a biopsy is needed, they can perform this at the same time. They'll also use the endoscope to take photos that will aid their diagnosis.
